Looking at the cover art, I hoped it was even half as sensual and exciting as the man standing in that hole, looking up. G.A. did a wonderful job letting us into the minds of the characters. I instantly connected with all three, although in different ways. I adored Clyde’s uncertainty and insecurity. Harry, wow! I don’t generally like to have the thought “if only he wasn’t gay,” but everything about Harry made me think that, as well as wishing he was a real person. I loved all the talk about tattoos and art, in addition to the constant sexuality. Then the introduction Jean, the art history professor, in chapter 2? Gorgeous! GA Hauser does it again, this time with a character who will grab your heart (and your motherly concern). The turmoil of Bi-Polar disorder, the consequences of this disability, are thrown into high relief and form one of the centerpieces of the story. The dynamic of the young man, Romeo, with the dominant Granger is intriguing, curious, and sometimes heart-wrenching because the depth of their emotional commitment is complex and shifting. Then Thomas enters the scene and that dynamic changes dramatically with Granger making an up-front choice, based, perhaps, not so much on a notion of love but rather one of loyalty and a sense of family. And trust, because in a D/s relationship, that is a key element, one that Granger takes very, very seriously.
For Thomas, it is a journey of exploration: his concerns, his hesitation are real. And where Granger sees only one side to Romeo, Thomas and his friend Ken are able to recognize and take steps to deal with Romeo’s issues.
The author shows us that life is not really as easy as … one, two, three, but sometimes it all works out that way despite everything.
I’m having trouble picking my favorite book by GA Hauser, but by gum, this one comes close, very close indeed. Five stars.
